Airport Shuttle vs Airport Taxi: Which Should You Book?

Airport Shuttle vs Airport Taxi Which Should You Book

A connecting flight lands at Heathrow at 14:20 and the next one leaves Gatwick at 19:45. That gap looks generous until you discover that no rail line connects the two airports at all.

People use “shuttle” and “taxi” as though they mean the same thing, but they do not. One is a shared coach on a timetable; the other is a private car booked for you alone. The difference appears in the price, and again when a flight runs late.

This guide compares airport shuttles and airport taxis, including the Heathrow to Gatwick route specifically. It draws on years of running these journeys at Camberley Cars.

Shuttle or Taxi: What Is the Difference?

An airport shuttle is a shared coach or minibus. It runs on a published timetable. It carries anyone who booked that departure. An airport taxi is a private vehicle carrying only your party, leaving when you need it to.

That single difference drives everything else. A shuttle costs less per person because a full coach shares the cost. A taxi costs more because the vehicle and driver are only for you. A shuttle runs to its timetable; a taxi runs to yours.

Is There a Shuttle Between Heathrow and Gatwick?

Yes, but only by road. National Express coaches run direct between Heathrow and Gatwick all day. They are the only direct public transport link between the two airports.

No direct train is available. Every rail route enters central London. You then change at a station like Victoria or Farringdon.

After that, you head back out. This takes about 90 minutes at best. It can take much longer with luggage and a missed connection. The coach is the only way to travel between Heathrow and Gatwick without changing.

How the coach service works

Services run roughly every half hour through the day, with the first departures around 04:30 and the last close to 23:30. The journey usually takes 50 to 75 minutes. It can stretch to 90 or even 120 minutes when the M25 is busy. This often happens on Friday afternoons and weekday mornings.

Pickup points are worth checking before you book. At Heathrow, coaches stop at the Central Bus Station between Terminals 2 and 3.

  • At Terminal 5, not all services stop at Terminal 4.
  • At Gatwick, coaches for the South Terminal leave from the lower level. They leave outside International Arrivals. North Terminal coaches leave from outside the doors.

Airport Shuttle vs Airport Taxi Compared

Feature Airport shuttle Airport taxi
Cost Lower, shared across passengers Higher, but split across your group
Departure Fixed timetable, roughly half-hourly Your chosen time
Luggage Limits apply, usually one large case Boot sized to your booking
Route Terminal to terminal, set stops Door to door
If your flight is late You wait for the next departure Flight tracking adjusts the pickup

Both are legitimate choices; the right one depends on your luggage, your group, and how much slack is in your schedule.

When a Shuttle Is the Better Choice

Choose a shuttle when you are travelling light, alone or as a couple, and have time in hand. On a route like Heathrow to Gatwick, it is often the cheapest option. A coach that picks you up outside the terminal is **exceptionally** convenient.

Coaches also avoid the forecourt drop-off charges that most major UK airports now apply. They run on roads, not railways. So a signalling fault or rail strike will not strand you.

For a solo traveller with a cabin bag and a few hours spare, the coach is hard to beat on value.

When a Taxi Is Worth the Extra

A taxi earns its price when luggage, group size, or timing turn a shuttle into hard work. Four people sharing one fixed fare often pay only a little more each than four coach tickets. They travel door to door, with every case in the boot.

Timing is the bigger factor. A pre-booked taxi with flight tracking adjusts to your real landing time. A missed coach means waiting for the next one as your check-in deadline nears.

From the driver’s seat, the practical difference is the walk. A coach means finding a bus station and handling your own cases; a car pulls up at the terminal door.

How Much Time to Allow Between Flights

Allow at least three hours between a Heathrow landing and a Gatwick departure, and more if you can. That covers immigration, baggage reclaim, reaching the coach stop or car, the transfer itself, and check-in at the second airport.

The transfer is only one part of the clock. A 60-minute coach ride is one link in a longer trip, and separate tickets mean no airline must help if you miss it.

Treat the journey time as the smallest part of the connection, not the whole of it.

Booking a Transfer from Camberley and Surrey

For travellers in the Surrey belt, the trip is usually from home to the airport. A shuttle rarely helps with that. Camberley Cars offers fixed-fare transfers from Camberley, Frimley, Farnborough, Yateley, Blackwater, Bagshot, and Sandhurst.

  • We travel to Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, and Southampton.
  • We track your flight for arrivals.

For journeys beginning well outside this Surrey belt, a local operator nearer your pickup point will serve you better.

FAQs

Is there a shuttle bus between Heathrow and Gatwick?

Yes. National Express coaches run direct between the two airports all day. They run about every 30 minutes.

They are the only direct public transport link. No train runs between Heathrow and Gatwick, so you must travel into central London and back out. The coach journey normally takes 50 to 75 minutes.

How long does the Heathrow to Gatwick transfer take?

The coach usually takes 50 to 75 minutes, though heavy M25 traffic can push it to 90 or 120 minutes. A private taxi takes a similar amount of time, with the advantage of leaving when you need it. Rail routes take around 90 minutes at best because of the change in central London, and often longer with luggage.

Is a shuttle cheaper than a taxi?

Per person, almost always yes, since everyone shares the cost across a full coach. The gap narrows for groups, though.

Four passengers sharing one fixed taxi fare often pay only a bit more each than coach tickets. They also get door-to-door travel and space for luggage. Compare the total for your party rather than the single ticket price.

How much time should I allow between connecting flights at different airports?

Allow at least three hours between landing at one London airport and departing from another, and more if you can. The transfer itself is only part of it, since immigration, baggage reclaim, and check-in at the second airport all take time. If you book the flights on separate tickets, no airline has to rebook you after you miss a connection.

Can I take luggage on an airport shuttle?

Yes, within limits. Coach operators usually allow one large suitcase and one small hand-luggage item per passenger.

Some airlines may charge more for extra bags or refuse them. If you are travelling with several large cases, sports equipment, or a pushchair, a private taxi is simpler. We will provide a boot sized for your booking.

The Bottom Line

Shuttles and taxis solve different problems. A shared coach is the cheapest way between Heathrow and Gatwick. It runs every 30 minutes on the only direct route. It suits light travellers with time to spare.

A private taxi costs more but leaves when you do, carries your luggage door to door, and tracks your flight if it lands late. Whichever you choose, allow at least three hours between connecting flights. Camberley Cars covers fixed-fare airport transfers across the Surrey belt.

My daughter and I had a fantastic experience with Benson—truly a 5-star service from start to finish. He took us to Gatwick Airport, and everything went seamlessly. He was punctual, professional, and incredibly friendly, which made what could have been a stressful journey feel completely relaxed. The car was clean, the driving was safe, and we felt well looked after the entire time. Benson went above and beyond to make sure we arrived on time and stress-free. I would absolutely recommend him and wouldn’t hesitate to book again!

Many thanks. Nice ride. Good booking system and automated comms. Perfectly on time and low stress trip. Thank you. Constructive feedback - Recommend that when it’s raining and there is plenty of space at the terminal, then drop off nearer to the terminal building rather than furthest away.. It makes a difference and would secure higher rating scores and a tip. Other recommendations - Suitcases on wheels should probably be put on their sides to stop them bouncing off the walls. With the above and perhaps cleaning the van and you get closer to 5*. When the cost of living strikes, I’m afraid people like me seek that little bit more than the minimum standard given the costs involved. Nice ride, pleasant driver and very pleased with the timing and communications. If you consider the above then it would feel a more professional service and secure the highest ratings. Many thanks.
